Saturday night proved one point: the third or fourth best team in the SEC might be the fifth or sixth best team in the country, and could certainly win almost any other conference. Alabama’s emphatic thumping of Clemson in the Georgia Dome put a fat exclamation point on what has finally become conventional wisdom among experts and even begrudging fans: The SEC is the strongest conference in college football. No other league comes close.

You can be forgiven for not getting up at 2:30 on Sunday morning to watch the Olympic gold medal basketball game. It’s an unseemly hour no matter which side of it is devoted to beauty sleep. But, if you missed it, you missed one of the best events of the Beijing Games, and one of the most important events for professional basketball in decades.

“It is the greatest sporting accomplishment by an Irishman in history, really.”
Those were the words of Brian Shaw, a former college standout and one of the first Irishmen to try to play in America on a full-time basis. Shaw did reasonably well, making a meager living on the mini-tours before heading home to become the head professional at Doonbeg Golf Club, a 30-minute drive from Shannon and one of the better links courses on the golf-rich North Atlantic coast.

Norman Reminds the World Why Tiger is the Best Ever |

It’s difficult to say given all the sentimental nostalgia from this past week, but Greg Norman had no chance at the British Open, and not because he’s 53 years old and plays less golf than the average club champion. He blew the 54-hole lead, because that’s what he does.

Everything at Olympics Will Be Slightly Askew |

In response to an unexpected outcry (and some projectile vomiting), hotels around the Olympic Village have decided to take “Dog” off the restaurant menus. Of course you can still order snake and worm. Or you can go to the inlaid bamboo aquariums at the back of the dining rooms and select your favorite giant water beetle, which will be steamed in the shell and delivered to your table with a bowl of white or fried rice.

Before it was introduced the current racecar in NASCAR’s premier Sprint Cup series was called the “Car of Tomorrow.” Then NASCAR made a lame attempt to label it the Car of Today. Finally they settled on the COT. This past weekend in Indianapolis the car Showed How Irritatingly Terrible (insert acronym here) it really is.

Tribute to One of the Last of the Good Guys |

Sports lost one of the last of the good guys on Thursday when former Duke All-American golfer and PGA Tour star Mike Souchak died at his home on Belleair, Fla. The Duke Hall of Famer was 81 years old.
Souchak wasn’t someone the casual fan knew, primarily because he played the tour from 1955 to 1966 when three guys named Palmer, Player and Nicklaus sucked all the air out of the game. But the big North Carolinian won 15 times on tour, and was the first real power-player in the game. Golf always had long hitters going back to Old Tom Morris who could crank a feathery farther than anybody, but Souchak, who started his career as an assistant pro at Winged Foot, was one of the first to successfully hit the ball high and hard with straight as a secondary concern, a model that would be followed successfully by guys named Nicklaus, Norman, and now ...

All eyes in the packed house, including the servers, remained glued to the big screen where, like a hypnotist twirling a watch, two guys in white shorts prancing about on a manicured lawn held an eclectic audience spellbound for an entire afternoon.

A car that looks like a lot more like something out of a European rally race than anything Detroit ever made; a point’s leader that is arguably one of the most arrogant asses in sports driving a Japanese car; and races that rank a half-step above curling on the boredom meter: what else could go wrong with NASCAR this year?
